I can hardly believe that we’re on the brink of the Christmas season! Where does the time go? Already today we had our Christmas dinner with the extended family. Seems a little early to be wishing each other a “Merry Christmas” as we part ways.
Today is the first day of Advent. If you haven’t taken the time to celebrate Advent before I encourage you to consider doing so this year. There are many aids to help you progress through the season and you can really do as much or as little as you want. Most years I have just taken the time each day to light candles and to read through the Bible verses that focus on the coming of Jesus as a baby, following the Advent reading schedule. One year we took extra time to meet with a group of friends on Sunday afternoons for a time of worship, Advent Scripture readings and activities.
I’ve found it so helpful to have this special time of focus on the coming of Jesus as the true meaning of Christmas. Advent activities have often helped to ground me against the many pulls on our time and attention at this time of year. It has also helped to centre my day and my focus more solidly on the coming of Christ as I ready my heart for Christmas.
